Since in vitro models similar to the complex structure of the body cannot be developed today, the use of experimental animals in scientific research is still ongoing. A large share of animal experimentation belongs to biomedical research and development. Studies on food supplements are evaluated in this field. In this study, we aimed to analyze the content of postgraduate theses involving food supplements and animal experiments. Higher Education Institution Thesis Center database was searched and 8612 theses completed until 2020 in the sports category were reached. The study was conducted with 34 theses that met the inclusion criteria according to the Prisma flow diagram. Restricted theses were accessed through the Turkish Document Provision and Lending System. Data were expressed as frequency frequency (n) and percentage value (%). In the theses examined, it was seen that rat (100%) was preferred as the experimental animal, wistar-albino (67.6%) as the subject breed, male (85.3%) as the gender, and 8-week-old animals (32.4%) as the age range. In the studies, melatolin (11.8%) and L-carnitine (11.8%) were used as food supplements, and the effects of running (44.1%) and chronic exercise (52.9%) were examined. It was determined that blood samples were taken from the subjects (67.6%) and oxidative stress parameters (50.0%) were examined in the blood or tissue samples. As a result, it was seen that animal experiments in sports sciences did not take into account the ARRIVE guideline, which consists of a minimum of 20 articles and must be followed in animal experiment research.
ER -
